My Passion Behind EcoCocoon and Where We're Taking It Next

Louise Kingsland, Owner of EcoCocoon

Today, I am taking the opportunity of Plastic Free July to share my personal story, passion, and purpose behind EcoCocoon with you. The foundational reasons I do what I do share deep parallels with this incredible global movement, which began in Perth, Western Australia, in 2011.

Key Takeaways

• Small, practical swaps are more effective than overwhelming yourself with the idea of needing to overhaul your whole kitchen in one go.

• Together, our community has prevented over 170 tonnes of plastic waste globally.

• A massive, highly anticipated adult-focused food storage range is launching later this year.

It All Started Because of Plastic

Let’s be completely honest: plastic fundamentally changed our world. There are countless vital, high-performance plastic inventions that support global health and save lives every single day. But it is equally true that single-use alternatives and low-quality materials have caused havoc across our natural ecosystems and potentially even our own health.

So, when Rebecca Prince-Ruiz founded Plastic Free July and the Plastic Free Foundation as a local Western Australian initiative, she asked a highly practical question: How can we help people take manageable action to reduce daily waste?

Circling back to my own story, long before I ever envisioned running a business, my personal question in 2012 was even closer to home: Where can I find low-tox lunchboxes, durable drink bottles, and everyday non-toxic food storage containers that aren't made out of plastic?

I had just become a mother to my precious son, and I felt an intense, instinctual unease about the omnipresent use of plastic throughout our food chain (this was well before the mainstream conversations surrounding microplastics); it was simply a mother’s intuition to protect my family's well-being and nourishment.

The frustrating part? I couldn’t find what I needed anywhere. Everything on the shelves was plastic (especially if I wanted vibrant, engaging colour, which I love and desperately wanted for my boy). The very few stainless steel options available felt clinical, austere, and looked like they belonged in a rugged hiking pack. There was absolutely nothing built for real family life that took children’s likes and dislikes, health, and food routines seriously.

Driven by a fierce need for a better solution, I went deep into research mode to source products that I believed should exist. That journey eventually led me to a Brisbane-based, female-led business up for sale: EcoCocoon, which held the patent for beautifully engineered, insulated stainless steel water bottles (at a time when they weren’t a thing yet). Taking a leap of faith and leaning heavily on my accounting background to ensure the business logic stacked up, I purchased EcoCocoon in 2019. My mission was to provide families with premium, highly functional solutions to help them transition to a cleaner, plastic-free lifestyle through unified hardware and practical guidance. And to get my son that colourful, healthy lunchbox, of course!

How We - Plastic Free July, EcoCocoon, You & Me - Became the Change

Looking back at the roots of Plastic Free July, it is incredible to see how this wonderful initiative has grown far beyond what anyone initially imagined. Today, it stands as the largest waste-avoidance campaign on the planet, inspiring over 174 million participants in 190 countries to take measurable action. Annually, these small, collective choices reduce global plastic consumption by a massive 390 thousand tonnes, keeping waste out of landfills and protecting the world our children will inherit.

And just like the global movement, our EcoCocoon community contributes greatly! Since introducing our purposefully engineered stainless steel lunchboxes in 2021, our collective choices have prevented over 90 tonnes of plastic from being produced and later discarded after it breaks.

Good To Know Why Stainless Steel? Stainless steel doesn't just eliminate microplastics from your meals; it is exceptionally hygienic, resists odours, and doesn't stain or leach like traditional plastic storage. It’s an upfront investment that pays off for years, preventing hundreds of flimsy containers from entering landfills. And if you ever were to need to replace it, it is 100% recyclable.

Where We’re Going Next: Something Built for You

EcoCocoon made its global mark by focusing on our children, their physical health, their desire for vibrant colour, and providing a clean, non-toxic school lunch setup. But looking ahead, I am planning something absolutely huge for the next chapter of EcoCocoon, and it puts YOU in focus.

You know how we all feel thoroughly overwhelmed by the daily kitchen chaos and cooking chores? Between tracking down matching lids, figuring out how to store dinner leftovers safely without plastic, and managing the endless cycle of meal prep, it takes a massive toll on our time and mental energy. Well, my team and I have been quietly working on the ultimate solution behind the scenes, and let me tell you, it is going to be big! We want to completely shift the way you organise your kitchen, moving beyond isolated items to create cohesive modular systems that bring immediate rhythm to your food routines and free up much of this stressful time to spend and enjoy with your families.

And, excitingly, the very first execution of this grand idea, the first step toward my purpose of creating sustainable, eco-friendly products that improve the way we eat and live, will officially drop later this year. We are stepping firmly into the adult space with a line that completely elevates your personal daily routine. Get ready for a gorgeous, colourful, and premium-engineered solution that focuses on us, the parents. I cannot wait to share what we have been perfecting!

One Step at a Time

As we reflect on the spirit of Plastic Free July, it is vital to remember that true progress comes from doing one thing at a time. You do not need an all-or-nothing kitchen overhaul overnight.

By starting exactly where you are, keeping what works, and making simple swaps that add up, you are already making a monumental impact. Together, as a community of intentional families, professionals, and partners alongside the Plastic Free Foundation, we are proving that we can drastically reduce plastic waste while building a highly organised, supportive routine for our households.

Every better choice counts.
